Western domination

photoWhile local media is rightly covering the demolition of Western Tower and Top Rank, the little noticed loss of Cox & Wyman is going to change a nearby area of town forever.

In just about anyone’s living memory, the Cardiff Road area has been a rare mix of in industrial and residential property.

But with the loss of first the Reading Post, then this 300-year fixture of the town, there must be a strong likelihood both will be replaced with housing.

The likely clashes of more tightly packed homes with lorries and workers’ cars might just mean large swathes of yet another industrial site will eventually be given over to housing.

Those jobs, if they remain, will be driven to the outskirts of town.

Whether this is the right way to go, we may not know for decades but it’s a huge change that is happening slowly and quietly while Western Tower dominates the news agenda.
