Empty promise?

photo(6)Empty units in The Oracle are nothing new but the current number might raise eyebrows.

Last Monday no fewer than nine were empty while three others were undergoing refurbs.

The number of empty units at one time may just be co-incidence but it has been a long time since this was the case. In the past an empty unit would provoke interest yet now there are so many empty they’ve started dressing the windows which simply suggests they will be empty a long time.

The question is surely: Is this a sign of the changing high street? And are these missing sales going online?

That might not be such a bad thing. The absurd levels of retail rents has battered independents who can now save a fortune by having an online shop instead.

If retail landlords are taking a big hit, the result might just be the introduction of realism. And that might mean opportunities for more, with cheaper rents and more business.

We can but hope.
