Bridging groan

photo(6)The issue of the lack of a third bridge might come to a head thanks to the thriving Reading economy.

Last year’s floods and the chaos caused by closure of the road to Sonning already prompted locals to campaign but memories are short and although Reading East MP Rob Wilson has secured funding for a little work on looking into it, few are talking about it now.

But Reading Bridge, see pic, is seeing sporadic lane closures due to works and faces two weeks closure in May.

This may well bring about gridlock and remind the locals that we need the third bridge. Even if it doesn’t there is a million sq ft of offices awaiting occupation or on the drawing board in the town centre.

If May’s chaos doesn’t prompt action, then the next few years in which masses of new jobs will spring up, is sure to crank up the pressure. The main thing is not to leave it to politicians.

The public should use it to drive the need for this bridge. And the sooner the better.
