Western end

photo(6)Demolition appears imminent for one of the town’s worst eyesores – yet when its replacements will appear remains a mystery.

It was a demand of the council that the eastern parts of Western Tower were demolished and left as public space until redevelopment began. But why the council didn’t insist on wider demolition is harder to fathom.

When the Queen opened the new station last year she was shown mostly the inside and the northern entrance. Little wonder.

But now with building work all around the area, this central location will become ever more in the spotlight. And if it stays as open space for a long time, there might just be calls for it to remain like that.

It’s hard to know whether that might be good or bad!
