Down market

photo(6)Reading’s desperately poor market is now even worse thanks to a large section of Hosier Street being hoarded off for some kind of works storage.

It’s been more than 40 years since it moved from Market Place and it has spent most of that time in decline.

Sadly in 2015 councils want glitzy me-too clone towns and it becomes increasingly obvious that markets don’t fit the image they want to create.

New developments of the Civic Centre area and the police station will doubtless put more pressure on the market to call it a day, and judging by the poor variation and quality that the market is now noted for, that seems inevitable.

Yet at the same time the old Wickes store in Weldale Street lies empty. This area has a decent car park and would be ideal for a permanent indoor market. Doubtless there would seem little willingness from those in authority.

But if they got the various stakeholders together it might just boost a run down part of the town centre.
