Empty units 4 us

photoIt’s customers may be caused some alarm by the closure of Phones 4u but for those interested in the vibrancy of their high street, its demise may not be such a bad thing.

For a shop to take two units in one street, barely 100 yards apart, is to add little to the town – and would now appear to have been unsustainable.

The council has recently rejected yet another betting shop in Queen Victoria Street but could have done us just as big a favour by not allowing two identical phone shops so close together.

When independents are struggling to have any kind of presence, it’s entirely wrong that those with more muscle, take a huge stake in the town centre’s retail space.

Especially when they were never able to pay for it.
