Swanning off

photoThere has long been something  of a mania for ‘encouraging wildlife’ but it might just be time to stop being PC about it.

Christchurch Meadows is a  treasured open space in Reading but take a walk down there now.

Instead of kids running about playing football, the grass area is awash with the mess left behind by huge numbers of Canada geese that seem to have swamped the river in a way ducks and swans could never keep up with. They mess the paths and they mess the grass.

You’d be careless to let your kids run about on it. These acres of land are now largely unusable for recreation and football is a thing of the past down there.

One day someone is going to have to be brave and make a big decision about what to do about these creatures, but most likely the current administration will defer and ignore it until it is demanded. Only public pressure will really help force the issue.
