Tower goes sour

TTReading’s ugliest building is about to get even uglier.

The latest plans for Thames Tower are an absolute abomination and stand to wreck the likely benefits of the Station Hill redevelopment.

After exciting plans to knock it down and build a more exciting building were finally drawn up, then abandoned, this low grade alternative is possibly the worst thing they could do with it. The recladding colour is even worse than the present dark brown and extending it upwards just adds to the hideous visual impact it already has on those who will emerge from the station.

It’s supposed to look like a building in New York but the truth is the first view visitors get of Reading will be of sheer half baked, pretentious ugliness.

Its developers refer to a ‘timeless and contemporary appearance’. I’m not sure those two adjectives don’t contradict one another. I just hope the planners agree.
