Tax take

AlfFor almost a quarter of a century Reading FC has been on a slow upward curve, the most successful in all its 143 years.

Thanks to the steady hand and unwavering determination of Sir John Madejski, the club has grown massively in that time.

But as was always a risk, uncertainty about life after Sir John is now rife.

A few years ago the answer seemed to have been found with the sale to Anton Zingarevich. Now he’s disappeared, Sir John has taken personal a hit financially in the downturn and now the club is being pursued by HMRC.

This would have seemed unthinkable a few years ago. In a sense what Reading have done is reach the stage clubs like Chelsea may come to in a few years. When a mega rich tycoon takes over a club the question has to be what will happen after them.

At Reading we are finding out very quickly and there is sure to be more pain to come.

But clubs with more stable ownership should take note. This sort of chaos may lie in wait for them. You can only keep finding richer and richer owners for so long.

Then the clubs which bought success might have to pay a heavy price.
