Bull market

photo(5)For all the PR we hear about Reading’s retail presence, you might expect the town could host a decent market.

Yet take a look at what a miserable effort the town makes. It’s little more than mobile phone accessories and fruit.

And the numbers using it today were similarly poor.

The sad thing is that the Oracle has given the town delusions of grandeur and a market, just like the much missed Traders indoor market, is seen as something to hide out of site and ignore.

Meanwhile places that embrace independent traders create a niche appeal that can operate alongside the boring chain stores.

When Bracknell and Wokingham have redeveloped their towns, maybe Reading will realise how complacent it’s been.
