Decked out

photo(5)Among the plans to improve Caversham is the concept of a two deck car park in the precinct.

Anyone who has seen the one at the former Wickes store in Weldale Street will know how these places become strangely hard to manage.

The upper deck there seems to be strewn with glass much of the time and is often cordoned off. What might make Caversham work is if they had people monitoring it. Not just CCTV.

Given that the precinct upgrade should attract shoppers they could do with a car park that is lit and safe. The Oracle stays in good nick because they have security so if Caversham has real ambition this is a chance to make improvements that will last.

Shops pay incredibly high rents at St Martins Precinct. Now those taking that rent need to demonstrate they can do something positive with it.
