Sunny gyms

photo(5)The Advance Gym in Friar Street stands to be a rare success in this part of town.

With its next door neighbour Sweatshop, these two businesses are well placed to complement one another.

But even without a well-matched neighbour a new breed of gyms is thriving all over Reading town centre.

Along with Advance there is its sister gym, Buzz in King’s Road, Pure Gym in Caversham Road, Anytime Fitness in Chatham Place and The Gym at the Broad Street Mall, all offering substantially better value for money than many of those which had existed until now.

In many cases you can pay barely a quarter of what gym membership used to be, for newer and better equipment and new gyms are generally open much longer, often 24 hours.

The only loser in this unexpected new trend is likely to be the overpriced gyms that were cashing in for years while members left their direct debits running but failed to use them.
