Bargain basement

photo(5)There is no shortage of these places in towns throughout the UK.

But this one on Oxford Road was said to be one of the better ones.

I took a look just to find out. What amazed me is how people can be led to believe somewhere is value just because it appears to be cheap. From teabags to toys plus gardening equipment, pets stuff and all sorts of other household things it has a wide range.

But there was little I could see that was not either cheaper in many supermarkets or labelled under unknown brand names.

Cheap toys, a classic false economy were in big supply. Plants were in big supply too but wholly uninspiring.

There seemed little or no reason for this shop yet people were turning up in their cars all the time. Since they’ll need to go to the supermarket anyway, they could have cut this journey out and saved money.

Ironic that ‘discount’ shops are thriving when what they save you is more in the mind than in the pocket.
