It was Bastille weekend at the Forbury Gardens where a French market added to the range on offer.
But while it was so hot, some stayed away. It was when temperatures dropped after about 4pm, numbers went up.
Shops, even the air conditioned ones, were quiet for a weekend so where were the punters? Seems they got it wrong.
There were very few queues, car parks much emptier than normal and people were walking slower, making the whole experience better than usual.
The Bastille event had a water spray that both adults and children would cool off under; shops and coffee shops were beautifully cooled and you could do your shopping in comfort.
When you think of the queues of cars desperate to get into the Oracle some weekends, congestion around out of town retail parks such as Reading Gate and Reading Link and the fact that most weekends supermarkets are at their busiest, you sense the people who stayed away this weekend made a big mistake.
