Free style

You might expect to pay £5 or so to get in but for once, this was an event that was free.

But were the hordes marching on the Mapledurham estate to get in this weekend? No, there was just a modest handful of people – and most of them were more interested in having cream teas.

Yet events such as the contemporary art fair and the CD and record fairs at Rivermead seem to attract the crowds while charging, in the case of the art fair, £7 to get in. You pay to get in and all there is inside is a sale.

The psychology is fascinating but however bad the downturn there is a body of people waiting to hand their money over.

That, at least is good news for business.
