Shop shape

ShopsThe poor state of retailing caused by excessive rents and rates is becoming more and more evident on the high street.

Tacky temporary shops selling nothing of any note, are cropping up all over while long standing names disappear.

As Fiona Brownfoot points out on getreading landlords are encouraged to fill shops to avoid penalties for leaving them empty. But the result is rubbish shops which will be gone in an instant.

If the government continues to do nothing, the high streets will die off but perhaps that’s the plan. Who knows what the government is thinking. Or perhaps it’s not thinking – just dithering. The shape of things to come is already evident and in ten years time it may be too late to recover from it.
