Over rated

photo(4)Last Friday the last curry was served at the Gulshan in Station Hill after 21 years but what are the chances of its re-emergence?

Owner Zahoor Raja has said he wants to relocate in the town centre but finds rent and rates a huge obstacle.

He’s not the only one. How long can this false market exist where rents and business rates remain sky high while retailers give up or go online?

The point the council and landlords will eventually get is that this market won’t come back. They’ll just get major chains and the rest of the units will be empty until they become affordable.

In the meantime customers and therefore jobs and economic growth continue to suffer. The only question is how much damage will be done before the message gets through.
