Good Ikea

2013 03 10 016With Sainsbury’s objections now satisfied, the last legal hurdle has been cleared for new Ikea store which, if timings remain on target, will be open in just over a year.

Not only that but the derelict warehouses which have stood out like a sore thumb for years have finally gone.

Now the retail park behind has to go before a large blue shed will start to become a landmark site, probably visible from the M4.

Like or or loathe it, Ikea will create a buzz, a hub, a centre of retailing like nothing the town has ever known. Along with jobs and commerce, it, like Clas Ohlson in the town centre will force many to be more imaginative and competitive.

Why it takes the Swedes to teach our ‘nation of shopkeepers’ how to do it, is something few have worked out the answer to.
