LEP of little faith

HarrisA new guitar shop is planning to come to the Harris Arcade – but who has assisted this rare bright spot in the town centre?

Various quangos and government organisations have been charged with the job of raising the town’s profile but what have they achieved in terms of assisting the independent shops and the town’s individuality?

Pretty much nothing. There has never been any desire to help independents, only chains. Now many of those whose job was supposedly to further the cause of Reading, have dumped the town to head for the new Thames Valley Berkshire LEP which has a huge pot of government money.

So now they’ve cleared off what have they left behind? Clone town Reading.

It’s left to the local property agents to get new occupiers and to get this new shop in difficult times, they are to be congratulated.

But the fact that so many people who were waving the flag for Reading, have now gone off to chase the money, suggests we could do a better job without them.
