Uphill struggle

The proposed demolition of shops opposite Reading station is a move that raises more questions than answers.

The entire area opposite the station is a series of eyesores but this latest plan to demolish the shops ahead of the full scale demolition of the whole site and that of Thames Tower will simply create a park in the middle of them.

The proposed ‘pocket park’ will be several feet lower than the shops are at present since Station Hill is built on stilts. Thus it will leave a towering eyesore at each end – Thames Tower at the east and Western Tower to the west, both looking more dominant than ever.

There will also be the delights of the Garrard Street car park behind it.

Furthermore when developer Stanhope wants to build its planned offices and shops, it will be building them on a rare bit of town centre green space. You can imagine the complaints.

Unless there is a great deal we don’t know, it seems a worse idea than this seems hard to imagine.
