The news that Deloitte has moved back into Abbots House may not be the biggest but it is significant in more ways than one.

Firstly, this was a major refurbishment. Abbots House has long been an extraordinary building, consisting of one enormous central atrium with a few offices squeezed around the edges, a concept Apex Plaza seems to do much better.

To make this building environmentally ‘excellent’ was quite an achievement. To spend £12m on it at a time like this is another.

And to have a firm of accountants – for even they are suffering these days – moving in to well appointed new space is the sort of thing that has pretty much stopped happening.

It also means 500 more people using the town centre instead of their temporary base at Worton Grange.

The likes of the Forbury Hotel, Forbury’s restaurant, Carluccio’s and small providers in King’s Road will see the benefits. Let’s hope the positivity is maintained when the new offices start going up in Station Hill.
