Red alert

In the constantly changing environment of Reading’s roads, you could be forgiven for showing a great deal of caution in the town centre.

You already have to be aware of the time, the day of the week, the latest changes and of course, roadworks.

But if you find a time when you can drive east from the west end of Friar Street, keep a special look out for cyclists.

This junction, where Greyfriars Road meets Friar Street now has this bizarre cycle lane complete with its own traffic light. Can there be a more useless traffic light? When has a cyclist ever stopped at any red light, let alone one designed for them?

This photo was taken about five seconds after a cyclist rode straight through it on red.

The one thing you can be sure of. It will be dug up and remodeled within a year or two so the only really annoying thing is why they go to so much trouble to waste money.
