Mains trap

You’ve only go to look at the Olympic games to see how business is often blamed for inconvenience.

But for smaller businesses it’s the other way round. These works by Thames Water in Blagrave Street continue to cause massive disruption and Caversham Road is now restricted for six weeks.

Thames Water likes points out it is replacing Victorian water mains. But that means the company in its carious forms, has had over 100 years to put the matter right.

Small firms will doubtless suffer but since they can’t put a figure on the cost it is going to be a tough one to argue.

Tougher still is the fact Vastern Road now faces nine months of roadworks.

Shops are often trapped by their locations – the roads providing their trade. It shouldn’t be impossible to have more say in how long any utility can close them.
