Soldier on

Try searching websites for free entertainments and you’ll find very little.

However, spend a few hours in Broad Street at the weekend and you could well find loads of it. This ‘soldier’ amazed passer-by after passer-by. He seemed motionless but when he did move he was robotic, complete with noises.

Kids were fascinated as they put money in his boot and he offered the clenched fist greeting. Other days you will see bands playing and on one occasion I saw a Thalidomide man drawing using a pen between his toes.

All were superb entertainment yet people will book for a gig months in advance and pay a fortune happily. They will pay any amount for a big football match, star name comedian or headline band. At Reading Festival they clamour for tickets to sit in mud to watch endless nobodies and the odd big name.

Save your money, go into Broad Street and enjoy whatever’s going on.

The level of skill is just as high. It’s just the ego these entertainers lack.
