Gambling on prosperity

Hard as it is to understand given the current economy, two rival casinos have locked horns to open big new venues in Reading.

Gaming International wants to run the new racino which will include a speedway and greyhound stadium in Island Road, while a mile north at the old Peter Green store on the A33 (pictured) Grosvenor Casinos wants to open a big gaming venue. The two companies, however are none too keen on being neighbours, especially Gaming International which says the racino could be in jeopardy because of Grosvenor plans.

Councillors deferred a decision two weeks ago at a planning meeting but this could eventually be a major fight for punters. The question is: who are the punters?

Despite all we hear about unemployment, energy bills, stock market disasters and underfunded pensions, there are clearly people eager to hand over big sums for a night out.

Given the numbers of homeless and destitute, the former model citizens living rough and the families who have no work, we could all learn from knowing where the real money is.
