As if to support last week’s post, an unplanned jaunt into town showed yet again how unimaginative the fare on offer is.
The Oracle, that hub of retail in go-ahead Reading was buzzing with people buying calendars. Most were women or couples.
They probably bought similar ones last year. One year’s picture of Homer Simpson or horses galloping across a field is much like another’s. Yet customers reacted with delight at the pictures and the unfunny cartoons. Like any magazine editor, retailers know that the same old same old, sells well at Christmas. Possibly because there isn’t much else anyone can buy.
These calendars could have been printed last year and they’ll certainly be half price in a few weeks so if it’s the thought that counts, then if someone buys you a calendar for Christmas you might be forgiven for thinking they had other things on their mind.
