More trick than treat

Few people would object to the Halloween novelties at Warings Bakery.

But when the national chains get excited about Halloween the atmosphere is more cynical than spooky.

Halloween, a bit of a non-event really, has been upscaled by big retailers to the point that those such as Thorntons and Clinton Cards seem to forget the people who shop there the rest of the time.

If you want a decent novelty the places are go are the independents because their stuff is just that – novel. The big stores are selling the same stuff everywhere and seem to forget everything for the next occasion.

Halloween at least doesn’t have the guilt trip that Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day and Valentines’ Day comes with. But even with without it, you’d think there was no other event in town when you go into these places.

But if you are going to get your kids to celebrate it, why not use the people who remember they need your custom all year round.
