In for a few pounds

The Oracle - untouched by the downturn?

Recent visits to other towns gave me the eye opening experience of more pound shops than I have ever seen.

Bracknell and Maidenhead are becoming overrun with them while up north, Blackpool has more pound shops than I had never heard of – Pound World, Pound for Pound etc.

Yet Reading town centre has just two Poundlands and the 99p Shop. On the other hand it has the Oracle which is bursting at the seams with fashionable names.

The downturn has sharpened the rich/poor divide and places like the Oracle remain almost oblivious to the problems being experienced by the shoppers at Poundland. Just look at the people going into the Oracle and look at those who hang around Friar Street.

Maybe it’s an illustration of what yesterday’s protests in London and abroad were about. And it might be that the ‘have nots’ might not be standing for it anymore.
