Buses between the lines

Changes to the bus service look set to infuriate and rile residents – almost deliberately.

Having returned to Reading on Thursday evening after a short break I planned to take the 10.13pm bus to Caversham rather than fork out taxi fare.

The bus was five minutes late even though it only had to come 100 yards along Friar Street from where it had waited for about 15 minutes.

It was fairly typical but now routes have been axed, changed and residents left with a poor service.

When a bus company sees little responsibility to its locals while firing out endless press releases about its latest hybrid buses and how it is going green, you get a good idea of where its priorities lie. Politics seems to be an overriding concern.

Few companies could get away with disregard for customers. But few companies operate like Reading Buses.
