Royal Mail fails

If you were asked to name what Reading doesn’t need in the manic Caversham Road/Vastern Road area right now it would probably include hotels and flats.

And yet the council has given approval for just such unimaginative developments on the former Royal Mail site. A massive mixed used scheme for all the usual stuff that makes Reading gridlocked and boring has just been approved.

About six years ago plans were being drawn up for a ‘statement’ building on this site. Talk was of 45 storeys! That would have been something special, but back in the real world where we are trudging along the edge of a depression, naff, run of the mill buildings look like all we are going to get.

No doubt someone will benefit if this dreary development goes ahead. But it won’t be the people of Reading.
