Panic station

Crumbling Station Hill buildings were due to make way for a dramatic high  rise skyline a few years ago.

Now realism has dawned and new plans being worked up by new owners Stanhope are far more modest.

In fact it’s hard to work out where the tenants were going to come from for giant towers at a time when Reading has a beautiful giant tower called The Blade that no-one wants to move into.

Thanks to planning delays, by the time anything happens  here Western Tower will have been empty for nearly a quarter of its life. You can only imagine the losses of previous owners. Seven figure sums were spent on the planning applications.

Station Hill has so far been a good example of the problems of the property boom. The volatility of the market seemed to have been overlooked.

It’s been a bumpy ride so far and despite the new realism, I’m not sure this site has a smoother future yet.
