After the carnival

The sad loss of Carnival Stores in Caversham Road will leave not just a hole in the retail scene in Reading but a large gap in Caversham Road.

When it closes at Halloween it’s a depressing thought what might replace this magnificent, barmy place.

Some are moaning about a possible Tesco Express but retail units have always had food shops. We need them. Thankfully the depressed housing market means less chance of an estate agent.

Worst of all would be some specialist shop no one is likely to use but will simply attract the odd business from far away. Who needs that on our busiest roads?

The Carnival Stores brightened Caversham Road. Let’s hope its replacement is equally imaginative. Sadly I doubt it.
