The loss of another major retailer in town is a difficult one to explain.
Peter Green is going back to its roots and closing the Reading branch to consolidate at Chandler’s Ford, its traditional home.
Yet just a few years ago the firm was looking at an expanding market in Reading because research had shown the huge numbers moving home here. Even moving short distances, people wanted nice furniture.
And even when the recession began, boss Susan Noone could see a market in the numbers of people staying home for dinner parties rather than going out.
Yet with so much open to Peter Green and a proactive approach to reaching its market, sales were disappointing in Reading.
MD Adrian Oates said the store consistently failed to deliver necessary sales.
If it proves anything it must be that no matter what the stats say or what the potential market is sometimes a gut feel is a better guide.
