Tesco might now be welcome

Almost every time a story goes onto a local newspaper website with the words ‘new Tesco’ it gets bombarded with comments about how we are being invaded by this monster of a company.

I used to write those stories and always looked forward to the barrage of disapproval.

However, last month’s rumour of a new distribution centre for the supermarket at the site of the former Courage Brewery (pictured) presents a dilemma. Anything up to 1,000 jobs could be created, making Reading as dependent on Tesco as it is on Yell.

How are the shop’s opponents going to keep up their opposition when Tesco’s success is linked to that of Reading itself.

The message boards suggest people don’t like Tesco but the numbers in there on a Saturday suggest the opposite.

Or it could be that many of the people getting angry about the spread of Tesco are actually shopping there at the same time.

It might not be such a bad thing if some of them are dependent on Tesco for a job. Then they can campaign about something more important.
